The Gold Epic
Relive the Klondike Gold Rush
1. The Beginning
August 1896. At the bottom of a forgotten Yukon stream, gold catches the light for the first time. No one yet knows the whole world will soon hear about it.
Skookum Jim (Tagish Nation), Dawson Charlie, and George Carmack were washing a pan in Rabbit Creek when the flakes appeared. They didn't yet grasp what they had set in motion. "Look at these small creeks... one of them, in 1896, held enough gold to change the course of world history."
2. The Hysteria
July 17, 1897. The Portland docks in Seattle loaded with raw gold. Within 24 hours, mayors, bakers, and police officers abandon everything. The stampede begins.
Journalists rush the docks. Photos circle the world. Over 100,000 people will set out for the Yukon — leaving behind families, jobs, and ordinary lives. Fewer than 30,000 will actually reach Dawson City.
3. The Ton of Goods
To enter the Yukon, you first had to conquer the Chilkoot — a thousand-metre climb through ice and wind, with a thousand kilograms of supplies on your back.
The Mounties refused entry to anyone without a full ton of food and gear. The result: stampeders climbed the Golden Stairs 30 to 40 times — one step at a time, in biting cold, through howling wind. Some collapsed at the summit. Others never made it back.
4. The River Descent
An entire forest felled to build rafts. Then the river — fast, cold, and pitiless. The Five Finger Rapids swallowed dreams and food stores alike.
Men guided overloaded rafts from the shore with ropes, desperate to avoid the stone pillars. Some lost everything — all their food, all their hope — just days from Dawson. Imagine.
5. The Madness
1898: Dawson City becomes the richest city in North America. Champagne bottles sell for $50 in streets of pure mud. Absurd. Flamboyant. Completely real.
Cancan dancers made fortunes. Saloons ran around the clock. Yet Sam Steele — the legendary Mountie officer — kept absolute order: no firearms, no Sunday work. Dawson was, paradoxically, safer than London or Paris at the time.
6. The Transformation
After 1900, shovels gave way to iron giants. Dredge No. 4 devoured the earth by the tonne. The Klondike never recovered — and its scars are still visible from the road today.
Dredge No. 4 stands five storeys tall and weighs 3,000 tonnes. It floated on its own artificial pond, advancing metre by metre through the Klondike valley. The tailings — those long rippling ridges of gravel you still see from the highway — are the permanent scars of that industrial age. Nature hasn't reclaimed them. It may never.
